Papers : of James Dinsmore Templeton, 1861-1909 (bulk 1861-1862).

In his diary for 1861 Templeton writes of his school and life on his father's Ohio farm before his enlistment. In the wartime letters to his family and in the diary he describes camp life, band activities, the land and people of West Virginia, marches, and battles, including Carnifax Ferry, W. Va. and, especially, South Mountain. At the latter he helped remove Rutherford B. Hayes from the field after the latter was wounded. Hayes is mentioned again as giving Templeton legal advice over a situation at home. Also of interest are mentions of the employment of contraband slaves and skirmishes with Confederate bushwhackers. With these are copies of a photograph of the band, his marriage certificate, pension claims of Templeton and his widow and an 1872 catalog of the Savannah Academy, Savannah, Ohio.
